OptiMic: A tool to generate optimized polycrystalline microstructures for materials simulations

چکیده
Polycrystal microstructures, with their distinct physical, chemical, structural and topological entities, play an important role in determining the effective properties of materials. Particularly for computational studies, well-known Voronoi tessellation technique is regularly used obtaining microstructures. Standard tessellations, however, exhibit statistics that are generally far removed from those real Nevertheless, such tessellations can be optimized to obtain certain key features seen In this work, we develop open-source software package OptiMic enables generation microstructures both finite element as well atomistic simulations. allows monodispersive grains irregular obtained currently via tessellations. These initial then reflect desired statistical features. A feature tool it gives user extensive control on optimization process customizable cost functions. The performs method easily extended include other methods like grain-growth, phase-field etc.

Modeling Polycrystalline Microstructures in 3D
Many issues in forming are influenced to some degree by the internal structure of the material which is commonly referred to by the materials science community as microstructure. Although the term microstructure is commonly only thought of in the context of grain size, it more properly encompasses all relevant aspects of internal material structure. For the purposes of forming, the most relevan...
متن کاملProbabilistic Model for Polycrystalline Microstructures with Application to Intergranular Fracture
A two part probabilistic model for polycrystalline microstructures is described. The model utilizes a Poisson–Voronoi tessellation for the grain geometry and a vector random field model for the crystallographic orientation. The grain geometry model is calibrated to experimental data through the intensity of the Poisson point field underlying the Poisson–Voronoi tessellation and the orientation ...
متن کاملExchange biasing in polycrystalline thin film microstructures
The effect of lateral element size, shape, and ferromagnetic layer thickness on exchange biasing in polycrystalline IrMn/CoFe thin film elements has been studied. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurements and magnetic force microscopy imaging have been used to elucidate the basic micromagnetic behavior. Magnetic imaging of micron scale elements illustrates that the magnetization reversal modes chan...
متن کاملThermal Response Variability of Random Polycrystalline Microstructures
A data-driven model reduction strategy is presented for the representation of random polycrystal microstructures. Given a set of microstructure snapshots that satisfy certain statistical constraints such as given low-order moments of the grain size distribution, using a non-linear manifold learning approach, we identify the intrinsic low-dimensionality of the microstructure manifold. In additio...
متن کاملResponse classification of simple polycrystalline microstructures
A new method for approximate solution of mechanics problems is presented that uses a classifier to identify regions in a random heterogeneous material where stress is likely to be highly concentrated under a prescribed set of boundary conditions. The example problem studied is an aggregate of hexagonal grains, each modeled as orthotropic and linear elastic, and subject to uniaxial extension. It...
